Placements for Students with
Learning Disabilities
Teens who struggle with learning and attention issues may benefit from placement in a school with expertise in learning disabilities. In some instances, such a school may be available locally. At other times, a boarding school can be particularly beneficial for the student with learning problems. The key is to identify the school whose approach matches the student's particular learning style, social maturity, and extracurricular interests. The school may specialize exclusively in students with learning disabilities, or it may have a heterogeneous population, along with a strong LD support program.
The structured atmosphere of a boarding situation, including supervised homework time, helps teach self-management skills. In addition, many LD students function better without the daily transit time among home, school, activities and appointments. In a safe and consistently supportive learning environment, formerly tentative students can become independent and self-confident, often graduating with a more positive self-image and improved academic skills.
